abstract

drought is the main constraint limiting chickpea productivity which makes a considerable difference between the potential and actual yield. in order to evaluate the effect of drought stress on different morpho-physiological characteristics of chickpea, four distinct genotypes were studied in three sampling times (pre-stress, stress and recovery) with three replications. as the results implicated, it is supposed that the tolerance or the sensitivity to drought is determined by the devotion of photosynthetic assimilates to different organs of plant during stress period and the misappropriation of plant assimilate to shoot parts is a reason of sensitiveness e.g. in mcc759. it assumed that increasing the ratio of root dry weight to total dry weight (r/t) under stress condition leads to drought tolerance in icc4958 and mcc696 due to reduction of water loss through aerial parts.

Shoot traits and their relevance in terminal drought tolerance of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)

Chickpea is the second most important legume crop largely grown under semi-arid tropics where terminal drought is one of the major constraints for its productivity. A trait-based selection had been considered more beneficial in drought tolerance breeding to overcome the environmental influence on drought yields. Large number of traits had been suggested in literature, with less indication on th...

evaluation of morphological characteristics of root chickpea(cicer arietinum l.) in response to drought stress

in dry region, root systems play a major roll in controlling plant growth and yield due to their importance in absorbtion of water and nutrients. in order to evaluate the morphological characteristics of root chickpea and obtaining proper morphological makers for screening drought resistant genotypes, four experiments were conducted in different phenological stages of growth including, seedling...

Characterising root trait variability in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) germplasm

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is an important grain legume crop but its sustainable production is challenged by predicted climate changes, which are likely to increase production limitations and uncertainty in yields. Characterising the variability in root architectural traits in a core collection of chickpea germplasm will provide the basis for breeding new germplasm with suitable root traits ...

GENETIC DIVERGENCE IN CHICKPEA (Cicer arietinum L.)

Genetic diversity of 27 chickpea genotypes was studied through Mahalanobis D and Principal Component analysis. The genotypes under study fall into five clusters. The cluster II contained the highest number of genotypes (11) and Cluster I contained the lowest. Cluster I produced the highest mean value for number of pods per plant. The inter cluster distances were much higher than the intra clust...

Root traits confer grain yield advantages under terminal drought in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)

Chickpea, the second most important legume crop, suffers major yield losses by terminal drought stress (DS). Stronger root system is known to enhance drought yields but this understanding remains controversial. To understand precisely the root traits contribution towards yield, 12 chickpea genotypes with well-known drought response were field evaluated under drought and optimal irrigation. Root...

Dissecting the Root Nodule Transcriptome of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)

A hallmark trait of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), like other legumes, is the capability to convert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3) in symbiotic association with Mesorhizobium ciceri. However, the complexity of molecular networks associated with the dynamics of nodule development in chickpea need to be analyzed in depth. Hence, in order to gain insights into the chickpea nodule dev...
